Herbal Dietary Supplement

Thousands of herbal dietary supplements are in the market today. Some are so popular and used even for some serious illnesses and they come in different forms. Herbal dietary supplements are generally derived from natural sources. And this is basically one of the bases that herbal dietary supplements sold in the market are labeled as “natural” or “herbal”.

However, despite such labeling, many people asked the safety and effectiveness of herbal dietary supplements. One thing that everybody must remember is such labeling does not necessarily mean that the herbal dietary supplements are totally safe and effective. Just like some of the pharmaceuticals, herbal dietary supplements must also be treated with caution.

Most of the herbal dietary supplements have certain contents that may be harmful under several conditions. It is commonly considered that many herbal dietary supplements in the market today, even though they are labeled “natural”, have real potency and pharmacological effects that can lead to harmful reactions in most people. Aside from that, many herbal dietary supplements are responsible for causing adverse interactions with the over-the-counter prescriptions and medications.

Another important consideration about herbal dietary supplements is the fact that there is only a limited regulation when it comes to herbal dietary supplements. In fact, since the Food and Drug Administration passed an act for dietary supplements, the act generally limited the FDA’s control over health products that are labeled as a dietary supplement. The act then holds that the manufacturers don’t have necessarily to provide some proofs on the safety and effectiveness of a certain product before they place it on the market. With that, the herbal dietary supplements are not really subject to the same principles applied to those prescription drugs or even those that are sold over the health food counters.

Since there is no guarantee for the safety and efficacy of the herbal dietary supplements, perhaps one of the best moves to take is to consult a doctor before considering taking any herbal dietary supplement. This move is very necessary for the fact there is only relatively few controlled clinical trials and some studies done on herbal dietary supplements. However, when talking with a doctor about a certain supplement, it is often considered that the name of the preparation is not really enough. For that, the ingredients included in the supplement must also be presented for some evaluation whether the product is relay safe or right for you. The instructions on the label must be considered and just to make everything so easy, consider bringing the label or the bottle with you to your meeting with a certain expert.
